Over the past week, eye clinics across England have been contacted by the Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT), urging them to gather statistics to measure the value of non medical support services to patients newly diagnosed with sight loss. The sight loss charity has also provided clinics with new guidelines outlining the value of keeping records and simplifying the process by providing records and examples.
In gathering the statistics, TPT hopes to demonstrate the vital nature of non-medical support as well as to gain information that may improve it.
'Without proper records there can be no clear definition of the work of eye clinic support services, and no appreciation of their true effectiveness,' said Sarah Buchanan, TPT's research and development manager.
'This can be the first step to making services more consistent and effective in every area of England,' she added.
