Sunglass Hut has started selling prescription sunwear in a number of stores for a trial period.
Optician understands the trial is being conducted in outlets including Cheltenham, Oxford Street, Covent Garden and Watford, whose patients can receive prescription sun lenses between the powers of +4 and -2D.
According to the stores contacted by Optician, the sunglasses retailer, part of the Luxottica Group, is offering prescription lenses for the majority of its brands such as Ray-Ban, Persol, D&G and Versace. The offer excludes those models, for example visors, which are awkward to glaze.
Optician understands that demand from Sunglass Hut's customers led the company to trial a prescription service.
It will run alongside Oakley's prescription service which has been available for several years.
None of the stores will be offering eye tests and patients are required to bring in a valid prescription less than two years old. They can receive their frames within approximately six to eight days.
Pupillometers are also being supplied to stores. At the time of Optician going to press, Sunglass Hut was unavailable for comment.
