More than 200 eye care professionals from 22 countries including the UK have registered as reporters for the CLEER project (Contact Lens European Evidence Reporting) - a web-based initiative managed by the European Contact Lens Forum (ECLF).
There has been a steady rise of in the number of practitioners participating in the project since it started in April, according to ECLF. Data collection will continue until May 2009 and the project's goal is to provide concrete evidence about significant adverse incidents in Europe induced or related to contact lens use (including non-corrective or cosmetic lenses) to bring about legislation to ensure the greater protection of the public.
ECLF is now urging more UK practitioners to sign up to the project and assist with data collection.
'ECLF is very pleased with the still increasing momentum of registrations and case reporting. We now have reporters from almost all EU member countries (plus Norway and Switzerland, for bilateral contract reasons) and reports come in on a steady basis,' said the European Council of Optometry and Optics' secretary general Richard Carswell.
'Already registered eye care professionals should continue putting reports into the database and others are invited to register and follow their colleagues' good example,' he added.
