Twenty million Britons are at risk of avoidable sight loss because of their failure to have regular eye examinations, according to a new study published to mark National Eye Week (November 24-30).
The survey, conducted by the national sight charity the Eyecare Trust in conjunction with Boots Opticians, found that 85 per cent of those asked admitted to experiencing problems with their vision, with 37 per cent saying they put off having an examination because of worries about money.
Findings also reiterated the lack of awareness about NHS eye care among eligible groups. According to official figures, more than 30 million people in the UK are entitled to NHS eye care.
The Eyecare Trust also estimates that one in five children has an undetected problem with vision, yet 50 per cent of parents with children aged eight or under have never taken their children for an eye examination.
