City students vote in favour of Goldmann
After a lively debate at City University last week, a majority of students voted for the use of Goldmann applanation tonometry as a routine procedure during an eye exam.
The debate, attended by over 70 undergraduates and chaired by Professor David Edgar, was over the motion 'Optometrists are providing a sub-standard clinical service to their patients by not routinely performing Goldmann applanation tonometry as standard'.
An initial vote suggested only 41 per cent in favour of the motion. Mahwash Rajput spoke for the motion and was opposed by fellow student Anika Nanda. There was a subsequent swing in favour to 58 per cent.
In recent years, students have tended to consider non-contact as first choice and contact techniques as a more specialised supplementary test. This result suggests that there may be support for a change of emphasis at undergraduate clinics.
