What does one wear to the ball

As the Optician Awards get closer I am faced once more with the conundrum of what glasses or contact lenses to wear while on stage. I’m stuck with the unbiquitous dinner jacket so eyewear is about the only creative outlet open to us chaps. It also seems to be a topic of conversation on the night [...]

Bobs and jobs week

It’s funny how news groups itself together sometimes. This week sees a job for Henrietta Alderman  as the new chief executive of the Association of Optometrists . The last incumbent, Bob Hughes, also found himself a new job this week at a Surrey based vision charity.  Alderman’s  previous experience includes work for  the British Bobsleigh Association.

No show pow wow

The failure of The Eye Show may have come as a great disappointment to many but it has demonstrated that a London optical show has legs. It’s been an exciting time for the optical show business but it’s time to start talking turkey. There are two protagonists now offering an event for the capital.    Is it [...]

Positive press for contact lenses

It’s been a bad few weeks for contact lenses in the national media following a rash of infection stories. There was better news this weekend when the Mail revealed that drinking contact lens solution saved the life of 18 year old Sam Woodhead the gap year student who decided to go for a yomp in [...]

The FMO chairman that Father Christmas forgot

Some seasonal fun was had by all at last week’s FMO lunch. Optician went along and carried a story on the collection of FMO officers.   Sadly an optical journal of lesser note than Optician also carried the story. It sent two journalists along but managed to leave out the name of one of the past FMO chairmen [...]

Media asks the media shocker

One of my bugbears is journalists asking other journalists what they think about issues of the day rather than asking the people involved. So imagine my surprise when…..following Private Eye’s dig at Specsavers  I receive a call from a BBC journalist asking if the facts in the report were right and what the rules were on registration [...]

No vote for Sunglasses

There is an interesting piece on the BBC website about politicians. They don’t wear sunglasses apparently because people wearing sunglasses are considered untrustworthy. I always thought policiticians looked untrustworthy enough without sunglasses on.  Whatever your politics I don’t think a pair of sunnies would have changed opinions.

Cold business

A price tag of up to half a billion Euros has been put on the Nordic optical business Synsam. I have to admit to knowing very little about this big Scandinavian optical business but the business pundits are predicting that a equity business will buy the group. Reports say Specsavers and the HAL business Synoptik [...]

Mr Christian!

Researchers in Australia are getting all excited by the discovery that descendants of the Bounty mutineers have better than average eyesight. It seems that the sailors and local ladies they befriended may have had a genetic advantage that could unlock the DNA code to do away with myopia for ever. The world would then be populated [...]
