CLs: Multifocals to the fore

Optician presents some of the most effective multifocal contact lenses currently available on the UK market

Safilens: Fusion Presbyo 1-day

According to Safilens, Fusion Presbyo 1-day is the only disposable contact lens with the company’s patented afocal design for reducing the effects of presbyopia. This innovative lens design is said to give an exceptional extended depth of field to the wearer, leading to clear images at all distances. Additionally, the lens benefits from a smooth surface, natural, quick and constant stabilisation, and Safilens’ fusion technology. This technology involves the synergistic actions of hyaluronic acid and tamarind seed polysaccharide to normalise and keep the physiological relation between the tear film and ocular surface stable, and aims to give wearers more natural, longer-lasting comfort.

VTI: NaturalVue Enhanced 1-Day Multifocal System

VTI’s NaturalVue Enhanced 1-Day Multifocal with TripleTear Lubrication technology is a multifocal distributed in the UK by Positive Impact. It features three comfort agents, including hyaluronic acid, which are said to work together to provide hydration throughout the day. The multifocal has an ultra-tapered edge profile, specifically created for optimal fit and to help the natural circulation of tears around the lens. It is a patented design with a rapidly increasing, highly aspheric power curve that creates extended depth of focus through a virtual aperture.

The lens is available in powers from +4.00 to -12.25, with 0.25D steps throughout the range. Since the lens is not a zonal multifocal, it is fitted like a single vision lens, which offers a significant chair-time saving with a successful fit achieved in an average of 1.1 patient visits to a practice.

Bausch + Lomb: Biotrue Oneday for Presbyopia

Biotrue Oneday for Presbyopia contact lenses offer a 3-Zone Progressive Design that is said to enable focus on near, far and intermediate with clarity. According to Bausch + Lomb, due to its Surface Active technology, Biotrue Oneday retains nearly 100% of its moisture for a full 16 hours, so patients can go about their day seamlessly. The company also notes that these lenses are easy to fit first time, with four out of five successful patient fits in one visit.

Menicon: Miru 1month Multifocal

Menicon describes its Miru 1month Multifocal as a super breathable, premium silicone hydrogel multifocal lens for healthy eyes and clear, comfortable vision at all distances. The lens features NanoGloss technology, which is said to create a super smooth, low friction lens surface, with antimicrobial resistance, that is designed for improved comfort. Additionally, the company says MeniSilk technology optimises high oxygen performance over the entire lens.

Miru 1month Multifocal has a dual balanced design to match the different visual demands of early and advanced presbyopes. The decentered high design with dynamic stabilisation, is said to separate out the images by clever optical placement of the near vision zone. Menicon says this minimises off axis higher order aberrations for optimum distance and near vision viewing, and that the lens is easy to fit with a high success rate. For convenience, Menicon’s multifocal calculator gives a starting point for the initial lens selection.

Mark’ennovy: EDOF

Independent provider of custom-made, soft contact lenses Mark’ennovy and the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI), a world-renowned non-profit organisation for innovative vision care solutions, have teamed up to produce EDOF, a soft contact lens for presbyopes. This monthly individually crafted lens, available in spherical and a newly launched toric version, is powered by the BHVI patented Extended Depth of Focus technology and is said to provide clear vision at all distances. The clarity of vision offered supports an easy adaptation to the lens as well as reducing haloes and ghosting. Mark’ennovy says the lens combines silicone hydrogel material with high water content and a low coefficient of friction to improve comfort throughout the day, while its wide range of parameters and low elastic modulus ensure a precise fit and easy handling.

Ultravision: Avanti

Ultravision says Avanti’s unique design allows for rapid stabilisation, ensuring crisp, clear vision throughout the day. Avanti’s Freeform Stabilisation technology is said to interact with the top and bottom eyelids, preventing the lens from mislocating during wear. The lens’s wide parameter range is said to allow practitioners and patients the convenience of a monthly disposable with the benefits of a custom facilitated by a flexible multifocal system, combining centre near and centre distance designs with additional options to optimise vision for the dominant eye.

Johnson & Johnson: Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocals are designed to address the increased daily demands on eyes and feature what Johnson & Johnson describes as an unprecedented combination of technologies: TearStable Technology, OptiBlue and Pupil Optimised Design. TearStable Technology is said to maximise tear-film stability and lock in moisture for exceptional all-day comfort, while the OptiBlue light filter is said to have the highest-level blue-violet light filter in the industry at 60%, helping reduce light scatter and increase visual clarity during the day and night. The Pupil Optimised Design technology, which is featured across the rest of the Acuvue multifocal family, is said to tailor 100% of its parameters to pupil size variations across both age and refraction and deliver 92% fit success in the first pair of lenses at the first visit.
