Optometrist Daren Rogers has qualified to compete in the World Cycling Championships this September while raising money for the Sunshine Glioblastoma Foundation.
The 56-year-old, who is based in Devon at Bennett and Rogers, will compete in the veterans category of the competition after taking up cycling during Covid-19.
‘I took part in a 312km ride in Majorca and one of the other guys involved thought I was pretty strong and suggested I have a go at the world championships so I looked into it and thought “why not?” I registered for a qualifier in Cyprus and got through so now I’m one of 500 people taking part in my age category,’ Rogers said.
Rogers was meant to compete in the World Triathlon Championships 17 years ago but broke his leg in seven places in a skiing accident.
He will raise money for the Sunshine Glioblastoma Foundation in memory of Katharine Rutherford, a friend’s daughter who passed away last year following a brain tumour.
