Specsavers optometrist sets up Kenya eye clinic

Tony McGinn

Specsavers Newtownabbey optometrist Tony McGinn has set up an eye-testing clinic in Thigio, Kenya for two weeks from March 26, providing sight tests and spectacles donated by practice customers.

McGinn, an optometrist for 35 years and practice director for 23 years, will be joined by his wife, who will volunteer at a local school and his mother-in-law, who will volunteer at a hospice.

‘At Specsavers, we recommend that you have an eye test at least every two years but many in this community have never had one. I am hoping to see around 250 people over the two weeks and help make a difference to their quality of life,’ he said.

The Specsavers practice has supported numerous charities over the years through instore fundraisers and sponsoring local events, including Friends of the Cancer Centre, Guide Dogs for the Blind and NI Hospice.
