This year’s Optician Awards saw Birmingham’s Spectacle Emporium win after setting up shop just two and a half years ago. Zoe Wickens reports

Janan Choudhury is on a mission: to provide stylish frames and designs to the public that allow them to fully express themselves. Considering his Birmingham based store, Spectacle Emporium, has only been open for two-and-a-half years, winning the award for fashion practice of the year is quite a feat.

Choudhury entered the world of optics as an apprentice 20 years ago at a Rathbone Market store in Canning Town, London. He ‘fell in love with all the intricate details’ of eyewear and slowly began to spot the unusual and different frames offered.

He continued to work at multiples and chains in the area but began to notice how the frame designs had become blander as time went on.
