The Silmo trade show may have marked its 50th anniversary, but the feel of the event was anything but nostalgic. Simon Jones and Luke Haynes report

Two weeks ago around 37,000 optical professionals from 149 countries descended on Paris for the 50th anniversary of the Silmo Mondial de l’Optique.

Over the past 50 years, the event has solidified its reputation as the world’s premier autumn trade show, playing host to optics multinationals while cultivating independent and innovative eyewear design. Organisers Comexposium backed this up by revealing that of the 957 exhibitors, 154 were new participants.

Visitor numbers were up by 10.5%, added the organisers, demonstrating that appetite for the show among the global optical profession remains high. Of the 37,337 total attendees, 57.4% came from 148 overseas, with the remaining 42.6% was made up of French visitors.
