  • A week of news – eye health in the limelight

Coverage for National Eye Health Week this morning culminated in the appearance of Anita Lightstone on morning TV show Daybreak Lightstone, programme director of UK Vision Strategy, appeared alongside young patient Mia Brown and her mother. The youngster had been referred by her optometrist after an eye check identified swelling of the optic nerve, and turned out to have had an arachnoid cyst. Brown promised Daybreak presenters she would tell her friends at school to have a regular eye test. ‘I don’t know what would have happened if I’d left it,’ she added. Lightstone followed up by saying eye examinations were also valuable in checking diabetes symptoms and blood pressure. Follow this link to 39 minutes to watch the TV clip. National Eye Health Week featured heavily in the mainstream media this week, also including appearances on BBC Radio Two’s Jeremy Vine show and in newspaper supplements. The real test will be in the coming weeks though, with the end goal not just a busy autumn for the optical profession but a return every few years. By Joe Ayling.
  • A week of news - look away now

Online publishing can be a tricky affair – competing with various other web distractions and anti-virus updates to grab the readers’ attention. This becomes even more difficult when you're doing a story about how visually demanding computer work leads to eye-related pain and mental stress symptoms. The irony. Scientists in the US exposed a group to visual stressors such as glare and small fonts, with muscle load and blood flow measured. A significant increase in eye-related pain and tiredness was found, together with blurred vision, itchiness, gritty eyes, photophobia, dry eyes, and tearing eyes. The good news for the optical profession is that in practice you should spend more time with patients and working with people, if nothing else to set a good example. As for the Optician news desk, it seems our long-hours hacking away at the keyboard can only mean one thing but something that is in the interests of us all – more visits to the opticians.
