I did one of my occasionaly Action for the Blind/RNIB clinic sessions yesterday and made a point of asking every patient about whether they had noticed hallucinations or unusual visual experiences since losing their sight. Every one responded that they had, some quiter vividly so, but few had felt the need or the incklination to report them. All were reassured by the fact that this is a common finding with the diseased eye. The RNIB fact sheet on Charles Bonnett syndrome is excellent and I recommend it to all practitioners to give out to their patients. I am trying at present to get a precised version published in the journal in the coming months. In the meantime (obviously with the required sensitivity) ask some of your elderly patients about this and let me know your experience.
