The fears of Robert Pattinson
-
It's not often contact lenses and horses are mentioned in the same breath, but heart-throb to teenage girls Robert Pattinson (of Twilight fame) has revealed he has a fear of both - contact lenses and fully grown horses. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he reveals that it takes two people to hold him down and apply the gold-coloured vampiric contact lenses as he cannot put them in himself. http://thecelebritycafe.com/feature/robert-pattinson-admits-his-fear-contact-lenses-and-horses-03-28-2011 Now I have never been introduced to Mr Pattison, but some months back while perusing CDs in HMV on London's Oxford Street there was a bit of a kerfuffle and it was none other than the contact lens-fearing actor himself http://www.sponkit.com/robert-pattinsons-contact-lens-problem/ sitting behind a wall of security personnel and signing autographs in store. Had I known then about his contact lens troubles, I might have been able to furnish him with the details of a good UK-based contact lens practitioner.

I can't help but ponder on the latest brand identity of one of the major contact lens companies. I'm not sure how much CooperVision spent on coming up with the new company symbol, but it's probably safe to say it wasn't quite as much as the Olympics 2012 logo. Anyway, the artwork aims to give the impression of water and comfort, and will now be seen on product packaging. On first impression, I'm getting oily puddle, silicone gel implant or something to do with the melting polar ice cap. That said, it could grow on me and I'll reserve my judgement until I've seen it in the flesh, so to speak. http://rochester.ynn.com/content/business/local_business/537321/coopervision-introduces-new-logo/

Singapore's into silicone
-
I've got an eye on the Asian contact lens market today, thanks to some information recently supplied by GfK Asia, and a very positive read it is too. Covering Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan, the results for 2010 are 12 per cent up on the previous year. While dailies are the main CL purchase at 46 per cent, I am pleased to report that silicone hydrogels are the strongest segment for growth, with over 21 million pieces sold across this market. Out of the five countries, Singapore can report the greatest interest in SiH lenses at 28 per cent in 2010. SiH figures for Taiwan and South Korea are lower than the others as consumers are in the intial transition stage from conventional lenses. GfK confidently predicts double digit growth for contact lenses in 2011 and I dare say SiHs will take a tad more business again. Visit www.gfk.com

UV protection
-
The American Optometric Association has awarded the Acuvue Advance Plus brand contact lenses with the Seal of Acceptance for UV Absorbing Contact lenses, the sixth lens in the Acuvue line to receive the approval. The chair of AOA's Commision on Ophthalmic Standards states that UV-blocking contact lenses provide important added protection and they should be worn in conjunction with UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. I wonder how relevant this is for the UK, given our paltry levels of sunshine, although it would be nice to know that it you're wearing contact lenses they do have this protection. http://tinyurl.com/6h5temf
