Clear Care not so clear?
There seems to be a bit of a dispute in the US over the hydrogen peroxide solution Clear Care http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/05/12070189-eye-burns-linked-to-misuse-of-clear-care-contact-lens-cleaner?lite with consumers continuing to burn their eyes by using it directly. The concern is that the warning - in red, prefaced with IMPORTANT at the top of the label - is not a strong enough caution that the product shouldn't be used directly in the eyes, and the warnings that it should only be used with the neutralising case are not clear enough. This follows minor label changes last year that do not seem to have stopped people accidentally burning themselves. CIBA Vision and the FDA believe that the cautions are strong enough. Reports to the FDA's MAUDE device monitoring system have continued since the updated packaging (12 from the last half of 2011 to early 2012), and some express confusion that the Clear Care bottling looks like that of multipurpose solution. I have had the very painful experience of putting un-neutralised lenses in my eyes, but always held myself to blame, not the manufacturer. Hydrogen peroxide systems were always a balancing act between using a very powerful disinfectant and being thorough and careful enough to complete the neutralising stage. You've got to wonder if consumers, me included, would still be caught out even if the manufacturer added DANGER or WARNING labels and redesigned the bottle so that its nozzle only fitted into the case.
