Scientists and researchers were collaborating with opticians to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to predict a person’s risk of dementia from a routine eye examination.
The NeurEye research team, co-led by professor Miguel Bernabeu and Professor Baljean Dhillon, together with researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University, has amassed nearly a million eye scans from opticians across Scotland.
This data, rendered anonymous, will be analysed using AI and machine learning, while linking it to relevant patient data on demographics, treatment history and pre-existing conditions.
Researchers will then be able to identify patterns to indicate an individual’s risk of developing the neurodegenerative condition, as well as giving a broad picture of brain health.
