Dry eye patients could benefit from a new bilateral sutureless treatment of dehydrated amniotic membrane (dAM) under a specialised bandage contact lens (sBCL), investigated by Aston University’s professor James Wolffsohn and Sònia Travé-Huarte.
Assessments for 35 patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease were conducted after 30 days with no treatment or with two successive bilateral 4-5 day sutureless applications of dAM under an 18mm sBCL.
A significant reduction in symptomatology and ocular signs were recorded in patients following treatment, including a notable decrease in the length and width of staining from grade 2 to 1.
The researchers concluded that an eight-10 day duration with dAM applied with sBCL demonstrated a 31-42% improvement in symptomatology and a decrease in ocular surface signs of mechanical stress.
