Glaucoma scheme rolls out in Scotland

Edinburgh-based optometrist Michael O’Kane has been selected to deliver an NHS scheme that will mean patients living with glaucoma can access support in the community rather than at hospital.

The clinical director at Specsavers in Morningside and Cameron Toll is one of 30 optometrists within Scotland to be selected for the glaucoma service.

‘I am delighted to have been selected to deliver this flagship eye care policy to patients in our community. This scheme will be of huge benefit to hundreds of people across Edinburgh, allowing faster and easier access to treatments and check-ups, especially for those who struggle to travel to and from hospital,’ O’Kane commented.

The service is currently being rolled out in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and is expected to support around 20,000 patients across Scotland over the next two years.
