Archive 5: Cutler and Gross

Marie Wilkinson, style director at Cutler and Gross, discusses the brand’s seminal styles with Andrew McClean

Character and craftsmanship are the defining features of British luxury eyewear brand Cutler and Gross. The creativity of its founders Graham Cutler and Tony Gross established a reputation for effortless style, bold design and a quality product that has been recognised by the fashion industry, including its licensing partnership with Paul Smith. Cutler and Gross’ understanding of wearers as individuals and dedication to the craft has led to their eyewear being worn by famous faces in the worlds of art, design, music and film, including Madonna, Audrey Hepburn and Michelle Obama.

0772 – The timeless square shape we are known for, reminiscent of a very British style harking back to the 1960s and 1970s. The design was personally endorsed by Tony Gross back in the brand’s earlier days. A heavy brow line offers a masculine edge. However, its well-proportioned and tapered lens provides balance to the face, giving universal appeal to all. Demand for a larger lens option enabled the 0772 Version 2 to be born.

0734 – The epitome of the pantoscopic, classic round shape, further amplified by a wide rim, was created in 1982 and the iconic, unique style has been in continuous production ever since. Its five-barrel hand rivet hinge detail reveals the honesty of rigorous manufacture and validates sustainable quality within eyewear. While the authentic wide ‘Paddle Temple’ created by Graham Cutler offers overall comfort and balance to the wearer. A smaller Version 2 of the classic 0734 presents a bolder optical frame to reflect today’s courageous tastes. The Version 3, launched this season as part of the Autumn Winter ’20 collection, arose as the perfect lens size (49mm) for the fans of the 0734 optical wearer.

0811 – Initially appearing in the Cutler and Gross collection in the early 2000s, the 0811 has been one of our top-selling frames year on year. A style worn and popularised by Victoria Beckham, the frame has developed a cult following since its introduction, due to its oversized lens shape, graduated lens and thin delicate temples. We are excited to have re-issued the sunglass for 2020 with new flatter, domed lens in a 6 Base for ultimate eye coverage and sun protection and the welcome addition of comfortable nose pads for an easy wearing fit.

0822 – Designed by myself in 2008, the 0822 combined elements of classic eyewear design; an inspired aviator shaped lens with classic round pins, alongside a flat keyhole bridge. The 9mm parallel temples were inspired by the first ever designed Cutler and Gross frames in the 1970s. My aim was to create a bold but shapely refined, masculine frame which could be worn comfortably every day. The 0822 has been the best-selling frame across all our distribution channels, resulting in a timeless, elegant frame which does not allude to a fashion or influence. It stands alone and works on a face in perfect symmetry with facial features.

1007 – The 1007 sunglass has been a part of the Cutler and Gross family in various guises from the late 1980s; a squared round, which is light and functional. The frame is a nod to the tailoring of the decade, simplistic in design with any excess material removed to create a beautifully crafted and functional sunglass. Featuring a Cutler and Gross trade secret, the metal nose bridge sits into the acetate rims without reinforcement. This technique reduces weight and provides superior adjustability, while keeping the rigidity needed to hold adjustment and fit. The style features in our new collection for The Kingsman.
