Conference report: Future of optics

Carl Zeiss wanted to show nearly 2,000 optics professionals from around the world, what its vision of the future of optics looked like. Simon Jones looked into the crystal ball

There was an air of mystery surrounding the Future of Optics conference hosted by Carl Zeiss in Berlin. At an evening meal before the event kicked off the next morning, delegates were speculating as to what was going to be involved. Would it be new practice technology? A new lens launch? Maybe even the reveal of a new smart eyewear product?

The answer, was that all the predictions were covered in some form during the conference, held at the trendy Funkhaus venue in the east of the city. However, to Optician’s mind, the event seemed to be more about bringing Carl Zeiss and the scope of its digital technology to the forefront of ECP thinking.
