Contact lenses: Through the eyes of a child

Simon Jones talks children, psychology and compliance with American contact lens and myopia control research expert, Jeff Walline

Simon Jones How did you develop a special interest in paediatric vision and myopia?

Jeff Walline I worked my way through undergrad by working at a day care centre for 2.5 to five-year-old children, so there has always been an interest in paediatrics. My PhD adviser, Dr Karla Zadnik OD PhD, pointed out a need for a well-designed myopia control study using alignment fit gas permeable contact lenses in children. That eventually became my PhD dissertation. I always worried that I would not be able to improve upon that study because it combined all of my professional interests: children, contact lenses, a randomised clinical trial, and myopia control. I have been very fortunate to continue pursuing all of my professional interests and provide research results that can be conducted the very next day in clinical practice.
