In focus: GOC study highlights the importance of contact lens aftercare

The General Optical Council has taken a forensic look at the contact lens market with a survey of users and their buying habits. Joe Ayling reports on the findings as the GOC prepares a new voluntary code for online retailers

Eye care professionals have been warned against neglecting aftercare advice as it has emerged that the vast majority of wearers still prefer shopping on the high street.

It follows the results of a GOC patient survey this week, showing 48% of patients could recall receiving aftercare advice at their most recent contact lens check-up.

Despite the rise of e-commerce, the survey found that 68% of contact lens wearers had only ever made their purchase in store.

The survey among 2,043 contact lens patients, commissioned by BMG Research, landed as the regulator continues to develop a voluntary code of practice for online contact lens suppliers. As part of its new strategy for tackling illegal practice, the code will include use of a logo monitored by an independent body to ensure compliance.
