Frames: Spring looks ahead

With all optical tradeshows postponed for the foreseeable future, Optician takes a look at a selection of new frame releases for the spring season

Bird Sunglasses

Independent British eyewear manufacturer Bird Sunglasses has released a new sunglass model for the spring season. Keeping in line with its eco-friendly credentials, the release combines a selection of different woods on the temples with coloured acetate rims to create an attractive, festival-ready frame.

The Kaka comes in a classic, slightly cat-eyed panto shape and features a keyhole bridge. Named after an endangered New Zealand parrot, the Kaka frame’s wooden temples are adorned with elegant aluminium branding and come with FSC certification. Available in optical versions, the eco-friendly Kaka frame also uses renewable bio-acetate making it a perfect option for the eco-conscious customer.

David Green Eyewear

Cape Town-based frame designer David Green’s new collection for spring follow an eco-friendly theme, incorporating renewable materials and ecological manufacturing processes to create bold, creative frames.

Each frame is cut from a single sheet of acetate rather than mass sheets. Natural materials are also inserted into the frames, adding natural uniqueness and style.

The Castello frame has real leaves inserted into the frame, creating a webbed transparent interior that covers the top half of the frame. A sloping bridge, squared corners and wide paddle shaped temples allow space for the pattern to play out with premium cotton-based acetate providing the construction.

Other models include the titanium Drew with leaf-fronted rims and Desna with a keyhole shaped brow-bar bridge.

Guess x Balvin

For the second year running, Colombian reggaeton singer J Balvin has collaborated with Guess to produce three sunglasses in a range of colourways suitable for spring. Created with Gen Z in mind, these stylish frames are statement pieces made to be worn not as accessories but as the standout part of an outfit.

The GU8225 frame features rectangular acetate rims that encase oval shaped lenses. The trendy shape sits small on the face and is adorned with the Guess J Balvin foil logo on the extra-wide paddle shaped temples.

Semi-transparent aqua that is reminiscent of a day at the beach is a great spring colourway with the option of mottled green camo and black with marbled white specs completing the options.

Keyhole bridged square shape GU8224 and geometric rectangle GU8226 round out the collection, with both frames available in a range of on-trend colourways.

Gucci

The Spring collection from Gucci, one of the world’s most recognisable luxury brands, plays with shape and nostalgia to create a bold range of optical frames and sunglasses in artistic shapes.

The brand’s contemporary, high-fashion aesthetic is connected to retro styles in the Cruise selection. Eclectic shapes are presented in intense colours with distinctive detailing and patterns to create eye-catching luxury frames.

Rectangular with a thick bridge and slight cat-eye, zebra-patterned GG0642Sis a perfect exemplar of Gucci’s collection this season. High fashion and out-there, the frame’s distinctive on-face silhouette remains eminently wearable.

GC0648OA is an optical frame with delicate Y-shaped
temple lugs that look as if they’re holding the rims in place.
In-built nose pads and contrast acetate temple-tips
complete the detailing, with the Gucci logo stamped into the temples.

Nanovista

Recently released, Nanovista’s new additions to its Nano collection for children have been popular with its customers so far. The British company aims to innovate in fit and morphology to create the perfect fitting frames for children. A dynamic design process was used in creating the new frames, with features specifically designed to cater to children’s lifestyles.

Light and airy, yet robust and flexible; the frames are brightly coloured and eye-catching. In focusing on fit, the frames are also available in a range of sizes. The Sleek Crew’s bright square rims are connected to the colour-contrasting temples by a flexi-hinge made of plastic, ensuring that kids can play all day without worrying about their frames. For added durability, the temples can be switched for a fabric band that can be tightened around the back of the head for a tighter fit when running around.

Johann Von Goisern

Handcrafted in Austria and distributed in the UK by JS Optical, Johann Von Goisern’s collection for the spring season follows a theme of bright multicoloured colourways and bold styles.

The new collection contains 10 new styles with five colour options for each frame, as well as the ability for each frame to come with tinted lenses.

Colourful and slim, many of the frames have been deliberately designed to be unisex with minimal shapes that focus attention on the eye-catching bright colours. Classic cat-eyed, squared and double-bridged frames are available to suit every face-shape with options for metal or acetate temples.

Kliik Denmark

Scandinavian minimalism, more muted colours and architectural, functional detailing is the name of the game for Kliik Denmark’s spring releases. The company produces eyewear specifically for those who require a smaller eye size and manages to include intricate detailing using laser cutting methods and textured materials.

A standard square shape on the men’s frame is elevated by a continuous piece of mottled acetate that provides a brow-bar bridge. With an otherwise minimal, dark coloured design the Kliik branding on the temple tips and thin, visible hinges and screws are brought to the fore in an expression of the functional elements of the frame.

The women’s frame sports slightly more colour with slim pink edge detailing around the outer sides of the rims. The women’s frame is slightly more cat-eyed but otherwise sticks to a minimal design philosophy.

Ted Baker

British luxury brand Ted Baker has released new frames for the spring season, one optical and one sun each for men and women.

Fishing is the inspiration for Ted Baker’s men’s optical frame Blaine. Colour blocking and milky-textured tortoiseshell provide the colour to the contoured panto shape which flows into blocky temples. Fishing line-like cable sections of the temples add character while fishing motifs on the temple-tips complete the look.

Marcy, the women’s optical frame, resembles a classic stick of British rock on its red and white striped temples with red temple tips. Constructed from enamel and hand-painted, the temples emulate a woven fabric and end in temple-tips which match the rims with a muted version of the colourway.

The inspiration for the Hendrik (3) frame comes from rap culture and the streets, a navigator shaped sunglasses frame for men with an oversized profile and a milled temple logo running down the length of the laminated acetate.
