Hair-raising clinical skills

Asa an adjunct to our current series on the expanding role of specialist optometrists, Andrew Matheson reports from the recent Toyos Conference which has a focus on aesthetics

I was invited to attend the Toyos Conference in Nashville this year. Doctors Rolando and Melissa Toyos run this increasingly renowned two-day conference. It is designed to keep eye care practitioners up to date with what is new in ophthalmology and aesthetics. In both the fields of optometry and ophthalmology in the US, there has been an increasing overlap into aesthetics. Having recently adopted Intensive Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy in our practices, this meeting was of great interest to me.

It was my first trip to Nashville. It really is ‘buzzing’ and deserves its title of ‘the music capitol of America’. Every pub and restaurant seemed to boast its own band and served great food. This was a feature of the conference. On Friday evening, we had lectures and a Q&A session over an evening meal. This was very pleasant and informative, and a great chance to compare notes with like-minded professionals. I learned so much from the other attendees as well as the experts delivering the lectures (figure 1).
