Modern optical practices compete against the giants of the high street as well as amongst themselves. Shop fitting plays an important role in this battle, says Paul Clapham

An optician is part provider of professional services and part retailer. That is not an easy circle to square. When it comes to shop fitting, the problem is heightened. Where is the right combination of professional excellence and retail pizzazz?

As a consequence there is a degree of uniformity in opticians’ shop fitting. White, grey, ice blue and silver seem to predominate. Nor is that a surprise, given those are the colours associated with clinical premises.

That semi-conformity is alleviated by presentation displays that use plenty of glass, stainless steel and the lighter coloured woods. Again they are logical and appropriate choices.
