In focus: 27 reasons for contact lens aftercare

An alarming account this week of a 67-year-old patient who arrived for cataract surgery with a total of 27 contact lenses still in her eye, raises new questions about patient aftercare and compliance. Joe Ayling reports

Horror stories of contact lens infections do not make easy viewing for eye care professionals.

In this week’s media though it was an extraordinary near-miss that made the headlines, after a patient attending a routine cataract operation left surgeons aghast.

Ophthalmologists at Solihull Hospital found dozens of stray contact lenses attached to a West Midlands patient’s cornea.

The findings, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) earlier this month, were jumped on by global news outlets .

‘Indian-origin doctor finds 27 contact lenses in woman’s eye in UK’, reported The Indian Express, while ‘Doctor finds 27 contact lenses lost in woman’s eye,’ was The Washington Post’s headline. Niche publication Starts at 60 went with ‘An optometrist has reported a case so gross that it beggars belief’.
