In Focus: Association seeks DVLA retest

The AIO has taken aim at the national licensing agency over vision testing contract and misleading communications to patients. Simon Jones reports

An independent review of the DVLA’s tender process in which Specsavers was awarded a vision testing contract in 2019 has been called for by the Association for Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (AIO).

The AIO has written to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and asked it to provide reassurance that all aspects conformed with the provisions of law, government policy and were in the best interests of the public.

As part of the tender submission made by Smart Employee Eyecare (SEE), the AIO said it was concerned about a number of aspects of how the contract was awarded. One related to the ‘unusual’ reopening of the tender after the first round of submissions had been received, while another was based on conformance with the government’s Small and Medium Enterprises Policy and Action Plan published on March 6 2019.
