In focus: Declining state of vision

Specsavers and the Royal National Institute of Blind people published its second annual report into the state of the nation’s eye health last week. Alongside the facts and figures were increasingly urgent calls for action, writes Chris Bennett

Sight loss levels in the UK are accelerating and the cost to society is rising as the population ages and the public refuses to properly care for its vision. For anyone in optics that is a statement with a depressing familiarity which begs the question of how the situation can be changed.

Specsavers and the RNIB are hoping to build a body of evidence to do just that. The State of the Nation: Eye health 2017 – A year in review builds on last year’s body of work on the scale and impact of sight loss in the UK. The indicators are not good, all have worsened since the last report.
