In Focus: GOC approves ESR findings

Optical associations have reacted with cautious optimism to the confirmation of the GOC’s new requirements for qualification. Yiannis Kotoulas reports

The General Optical Council’s (GOC) Education Strategic Review (ESR) was brought to a conclusion last week as the GOC Council approved new education and training requirements for DOs and optometrists.

Launched in July 2020, the GOC consultation on its ESR sought to gather industry and stakeholder views on proposals to update the GOC requirements for qualification. Throughout the consultation period various organisations voiced their concerns, leading the GOC to announce that the review’s proposals would be refined by its expert advisory groups (EAGs). The GOC has met its self imposed deadline for this review process, having set February 2021 as the date for the refined proposals to be agreed upon at a council meeting.
