In focus: Review row resurfaces

ABDO and the GOC have once again locked horns over the regulator’s controversial Education Strategic Review. Simon Jones reports

No secret has been made that the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has taken a dim view of the General Optical Council’s broad Education Strategic Review, but ABDO general secretary Sir Tony Garrett has reignited the debate with a punchy leader column in the association’s in-house publication, Dispensing Optics.

Questioning the GOC’s continued work on the ESR during the coronavirus pandemic, which was confirmed at a Council meeting in May, Sir Tony wrote: ‘I am sorry to report that despite the enormous challenge the sector is facing, the General Optical Council is ploughing on with its Education Strategic Review. As everyone knows, we have very serious concerns about its direction and the implications for both the profession and the public.
