New requirements for the education and training of optometrists and dispensing opticians have been published. Mike Hale reports

The General Optical Council (GOC) has published its new education and training requirements for qualifications leading to registration as a dispensing optician or optometrist following extensive consultation and engagement with stakeholders over several years as part of its Education Strategic Review.

The requirements, which were outlined and approved at a GOC Council meeting in February of this year (Optician 10.02.21), have been in effect since March 1 and set out the knowledge, skills and behaviours an optical student must demonstrate to be awarded a GOC approved qualification to join the register as an optometrist or dispensing optician. The published document also specifies the requirements for providers who offer GOC-approved qualifications.
