Katz combines much traditional method, which evidently stems from the tradition of Southall, with influences from the UK, as the bibliography and references indicate.

Students of optometry and a variety of optical occupations are bound to appreciate the systematic approach, the abundance of clear diagrams and the many examples.

There is ample opportunity for self-testing with the frequent question and answer sections. On the whole, there is no difficulty with 'conventions' and labelling, since the use of u and u' instead of the accepted  l  and  l' is no barrier. There is good treatment of stops, magnification and aberrations.
