Landing new staff

I used to say when I came into this job that there were only four places where it's hard to get optometrists,' says head of professional services at Boots Opticians, Richard Edwards. 'England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. But things are very different now.'

What has changed is both the number of graduates, and who those graduates are. 'Universities used to produce between 250 and 300 optometry graduates a year, now they're producing between 550 and 600, and all of that growth has been female,' he says. 'There are no more male optometrists than there were 10 years ago.'
