Since 2008, business owners have had a ‘tough ride’. But, will a regeneration project change the fortunes of Barnsley? Luke Haynes reports

Nestled between the Yorkshire giants of Leeds and Sheffield sits the old mining town of Barnsley. Despite, having over 70 collieries within a 15-mile radius of the town centre at one point, there are no operating mines in Barnsley today.

In recent times, the town has undergone a major regeneration programme and a modern shopping area is due to be installed by 2020, but will it boost local trade?

‘The people are nice, but the town’s quite rundown now,’ admits Philip Potter, owner of The Spectacle Shop. ‘For the businesses that are here, it’s been a tough ride for ten years,’ he adds.
