Look local: The Exeter faithful

In Exeter, history and modernity collide to produce a range of optical services. Sean Rai-Roche reports

Much of Exeter was flattened during World War Two following bombing by the German Luftwaffe. Then, between 1941 and 1943, a Polish squadron nicknamed the ‘Lwów Eagle Owls’, after their home city, stepped in to defend the town. To this day both cities share the same Semper fidelis motto – ‘always faithful’ – and this ethos carries on in many opticians enjoying longstanding relationships with their customers.

‘Exeter is an absolutely fantastic place to work and live,’ say Martyn Skinner, practice manager at Vision Express. ‘It’s a really cultured place that is mild in the winter and warm and sunny during the summer.’
