Look local: Glorious and golden Guildford

Culture, history and great schools make Guildford a desirable place to live. Emma White reports

The Surrey town of Guildford - or Guilden (Golden) ford, as it was known in the Saxon age - is located 27 miles south-west of central London on the banks of the River Wey. With its rich history and cultural heritage, boutique shops, restaurants, sought-after property and schools, it is no wonder the market town is often featured on ‘best places to live’ lists.

The main cobbled high street hill runs parallel to one of the town’s best-known landmarks, Guildford Castle, built by William the Conqueror shortly after 1066. Other highlights include Guildford Cathedral, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, the Royal Grammar School and the Guildford House Art Gallery, located in a 17th century grade I listed town house. Guildford is surrounded by open countryside, National Trust properties and the beautiful Loseley Park manor house.
