Practices in St Andrews are pushing for independent prescriber qualifications, finds Jo Gallacher

Named after the patron saint of Scotland, St Andrews has long been considered an important town in Scottish history. The town has been a site of pilgrimage since the 8th century with its famous cathedral, which at one point was the largest in Scotland, as a focal point. In modern history, the town is known worldwide as the ‘home of golf’, boasting seven golf courses and regulalry hosting the Open Championship.

Independent practice Govan Opticians is kept busy due to both regular sight tests and its increasing enhanced services portfolio. Partner and practice manager Iain Pentland says: ‘We get a lot of GP referrals and we cover local hospitals. It can become quite challenging when we get busy but it’s something we manage. We get lots of interesting cases including a fair few retinal detachments.’
