Low vision rehabilitation, a global right

Myran Gast and Joanneke Kampen Smalbrugge report from the Netherlands where the latest major international conference focusing on low vision took place

The 12th International Conference of the International Society for Low Vision Research and Rehabilitation (ISLRR) took place at the end of June at the World Forum in the Hague. Over 1,000 delegates from all over the world took part in 75 sessions, 12 workshops and more than 100 posters. The conference was a focal point for the latest academic and scientific research and also offered the latest thinking in practical and clinical application.

Having a visual impairment has a major impact on everyday functioning. Individuals with low vision experience some difficulties in almost all aspects of their life. Therefore, they are more restricted in their participation and interaction within society. The goal of low vision rehabilitation is to enhance the ability of the patient’s remaining vision or even those without vision.
