Coopervision: MiSight 1 day

CooperVision says MiSight 1 day is the world’s first CE-marked, soft daily disposable contact lens proven to significantly slow the progression of myopia in children and therefore lower the risk of myopia-related ocular conditions later in life.

The company states that the advanced lens design utilises innovative ActivControl technology to control both axial elongation and myopia progression, while fully correcting refractive error. Two treatment zones create myopic defocus with an image focused in front of the retina, rather than behind it, to slow axial elongation, while two correction zones correct myopia in all gaze positions.

CooperVision says its research into MiSight 1 day’s effectiveness has been far-reaching and includes a gold standard prospective, multi-centre, double-masked, randomised multi-year study that enrolled 144 myopic children aged eight to 12 years from Singapore, Canada, the UK and Portugal. Three-year peer-reviewed results published in Optometry and Vision Science indicated use of MiSight 1 day was shown to slow myopia progression: 59% as measured by mean cycloplegic spherical equivalent and 52% as measured by mean axial elongation of the eye.

Mark’ennovy: Mylo

The Mylo contact lens from Mark’ennovy is an individually crafted silicone hydrogel lens specifically designed for myopia management. It is powered by the Brien Holden Vision Institute’s patented Extended Depth of Focus technology, which is said to have been proven effective in reducing myopia progression. For over 30 years, the Brien Holden Vision Institute has been developing solutions for the correction of refractive errors with a specific focus on myopia.

Mylo is a monthly disposable contact lens that features high water content (75%), and is said to provide an excellent balance of comfort and oxygen transmission (Dk/t 75). The company says the wide range of parameters for the lens supports a more precise contact lens fit and allows Mylo to be carefully personalised to the eye at any age or stage of myopia management. The lens is available in base curves from 7.10 to 9.80mm in 0.30mm steps and in powers 0.25 to -15.00D in 0.25D steps.

Safilens: Delivery Tyro

Delivery Tyro is a daily contact lens designed to release what Safilens describes as lachryceuticals, natural substances that can influence some physiological processes, and is the first product to launch in the company’s new Delivery family of products. Safilens says that Delivery Tyro lenses work to correct myopia and favour normalisation of the development of the eye by the constant release of tyrosine onto the anterior segment of the eye during wear.

Tyrosine is a semi-essential amino acid, capable of passing through the blood-ocular barrier, and by being its precursor, promotes the natural production of dopamine. The adequate presence of dopamine inside the retina has been shown, according to Safilens, to have an important normalising effect in ocular development, in particular an inhibitory effect on the elongation of the eyeball. Similarly, the company says, its low production/presence, often caused by excessive accommodative effort and inadequate exposure to the beneficial wavelengths of natural light, was found to be concomitant with refractive errors related to eye particular anatomical conditions such as myopia.

VTI: NaturalVue

NaturalVue 1-Day Multifocal contact lens from VTI is available in the UK from Positive Impact. CE approved for both myopia control and presbyopia, NaturalVue is said to use unique and patented centre-distance optics leading to an extended depth-of-focus design. According to VTI, the NaturalVue design utilises a smooth, rapidly increasing, highly aspheric power curve that causes blur in the peripheral retina. The consequence is a ‘virtual aperture’ created by the interaction with the visual cortex, which ignores the peripheral blur from the smooth, continuous positive power curve of the contact lens design. The virtual aperture is said to act like a pinhole and control aberrations. For myopia management use, VTI says the design induces peripheral myopia without compromising vision.

Data from 153 children being treated across 13 practices in the USA shows, on average, children wearing NaturalVue MF experienced a 90% reduction in the worsening of their myopia between the ages of six months and five years. Ninety-three percent of children experienced a slowing of their progression in myopia, with 65% experiencing a slowing of greater than 70%. VTI says no contact lens related adverse events have been reported in these studies. The lens is available in a power range of +4.00D to -12.25D in 0.25D steps.

Orthokeratology contact lenses

Menicon: Bloom Night

Bloom Night from Menicon is part of the company’s upcoming Bloom Myopia Control Management System and is said to be the world’s first orthokeratology lens approved for myopia control. According to Menicon, Bloom Night therapy involves the overnight wear of the specially designed orthokeratology contact lens, manufactured in hyper oxygen permeable Menicon Z material, that ensures optimal corneal oxygenation for comfortable and safe contact lens wear. The treatment temporarily changes the shape of the cornea by flattening and steepening the central and mid-peripheral corneal curvatures, respectively. These corneal changes occur overnight and reduce refractive error, thus eliminating the need to wear contact lenses throughout the waking hours after lenses are removed. The new corneal shape provides a particular optical path for incoming light that counters the ocular growth response associated with myopia development. Through this mechanism, Menicon Bloom Night is indicated for the correction of refractive myopia and for control of myopia when prescribed and managed by a qualified eye care professional.

The company says scientific evidence collected over the years has supported the efficacy, safety and acceptance of Menicon Bloom Night as a successful treatment option for myopia control management. It has been independently confirmed by notified bodies in Europe and granted the treatments CE-approval for the specific indication of myopia control.

No 7 contact lenses: EyeDream

No 7 Contact Lenses’s orthokeratology lens, EyeDream, has been available for vision correction since 2005. Now indicated for myopia management, No 7 says EyeDream is a safe and convenient way to slow the progression of myopia in children because orthokeratology has been shown to induce relative myopic shifts in peripheral refractive errors, consistent with the most widely accepted hypothesis for the optical myopia control effect.

The company cites a 2015 paper, Orthokeratology for Myopia Control: A Meta Analysis, Si et al, Optometry and Vision Science, that looked at seven studies, all with two years of data. The papers included 435 subjects, 218 in the orthokeratology group and 217 in the control group. The data analysis showed a 56% reduction in axial elongation for the orthokeratology compared with the control group. In addition to the benefit of being lens free during the day, EyeDream also offers a myopia management option for astigmatic patients with cyls up to -2.50.

Hoya: Miyosmart

Silmo d’Or Award Winner 2020, Miyosmart, is a new non-invasive myopia management lens that is said to be both safe and convenient for the patient as it is worn just like ordinary spectacle lenses. The result of a collaborative development between Hoya Vision Care and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Miyosmart lens design features patented Defocus Incorporated Multi Segment Technology and is clinically proven to correct both myopia and provide effective control. Participants who completed a two-year trial wearing Miyosmart, had myopia progression reduced by an average of 60%.

The lenses provide vision correction so the wearer will experience comfortable vision in daily wear while the lenses also work to reduce the progression of their short-sightedness. The Miyosmart lens is said to be easy to adapt to and suitable for full time daily wear for a wide range of activities. Additionally the lenses provide comprehensive UV protection for the eyes and feature an easy clean finish and an anti-reflective durable coating.
