Optician rounds up the various orthokeratology contact lenses products available to practitioners in the UK

No7 Contact Lenses EyeDream

According to No7 Contact Lenses, EyeDream is the UK’s leading orthokeratology brand. Launched in 2004, it now boasts over 30,000 wearers and over 350 certified EyeDream centres. To achieve this success, No7 has focused on the fundamental principles of product quality, education and support. In 15 years, No7 has hosted over 150, CET accredited EyeDream workshops. Driven by Katie Harrop, No7’s professional services director and orthokeratology opinion leader, these events have opened up opportunities in orthokeratology and myopia control to over 2000 eye care professionals (ECPs) and their patients.

To support existing EyeDream practices, No7 has a four-strong technical support team. Technical director, Kevin Taylor and his team boast a combined experience in specialist contact lenses of over 80 years. For patient fitting, EyeDream exclusively uses topographical data, managed through its proprietary desktop app. The software is a collaboration tool designed to make the fitting process more efficient. This enhances the patient/practitioner experience and, importantly, improves the level of successful outcomes.

IGO Emerald & Topaz

IGO officially launched its orthokeratology lenses in the UK market in January 2008. The company only supplies orthokeratology lenses and offers a full range of marketing support – web-based, POS, direct mail and, latterly, social media – to practices accredited through an online training programme. Only practitioners who successfully completed the online training can be supplied lenses by IGO.

The initial product distributed by IGO was US manufacturer Euclid’s Emerald lens which treated up to -5.0D of myopia. This was followed in 2011 by the UK launch of the Euclid’s Topaz high myopia lens which treated up to -8.0D of myopia. In the past two years IGO has launched toric versions of both lenses which additionally treat up to -2.5D of astigmatism. All four orthokeratology lens variants are offered in three diameters to provide maximum flexibility in addressing any centration issues as well as dealing with any residual flare and halo problems for patients with larger pupil diameters.

Scotlens Nocturnal

Scotlens has been offering orthokeratology with its Nocturnal lenses since 2003. The company’s Lathe2i manufacturing process means the Nocturnal lenses are freeform and this has lead to one of the highest rates of first-time lens fit success on the market. Lens design and alterations are provided to suit a patient’s topography, meaning the ECP can spend time with the patient rather than on administration. CET approved training and support is offered through Scotlens by practicing optometrists to provide explanations to any enquiries.

Nocturnal lenses are competitively priced allowing practices to offer a profitable vision correction benefiting both patient and business. Nocturnal is a dual alignment reverse curve GP lens made to Rx. Standard parameters are - Rx range -0.50 to -5.00, Cyl up to -1.25, while standard diameter is 11.00mm with BOZR sag calculated and toric lenses supplied at 40 micron corneal sag difference between meridians. Menicon Z Night

Menicon Z Night is the world’s first orthokeratology lens in a material with a hyper Dk of 189 and FDA clearance for 30 days continuous wear. The lens is said to highlight Menicon’s commitment to patient safety and give practitioners the confidence that they are prescribing the most effective and safe option for their patients in this lens modality.

This is further reinforced by building in additional features to the lens design, including fenestrations to assist with lens removal and prevent lens binding. This promotes complete control over lens centration with tangent curve lens geometry and fitted using the Easyfit software that optimises lens fit based on corneal topography while allowing for any interpolation of data and ensuring central corneal clearance is always maintained.

The free of charge Easyfit software puts the practitioner firmly in control by allowing all amendments to be carried out and recorded within the system with practitioner support just a click away if needed.
