I write this article as a relatively new varifocal wearer still hugely impressed at how effective modern progressive addition lenses are but also aware of the adaption issues many ultimately successful wearers can experience. I also write, not as a professed optometric or dispensing expert, but simply based on my observations and insights from dealing with the many non-tolerance cases that come the way of the OCCS.
There are many causes of non-tolerance to varifocals and there is no panacea in addressing such a multi-factorial issue, however, having had many conversations with practice teams over the past two years I am convinced that if, as a sector, we can move the dial on a few key areas we could significantly reduce the number of non-tolerance cases. During these conversations it is often very apparent that some of the critical factors in accurate dispensing of modern Pals are not always clearly understood and that our record keeping in relation to dispensing is not perhaps always as tight as it could be.
