Optician travels to Berkshire Ophthalmic Labs in Thatcham to talk machinery and flooding with the company's operations director Dean Curcher

The Curcher family purchased the lab 30 years ago from the Bateman family. It began life above a practice in Reading, before moving to Thatcham under the ownership of the Curchers. Since then, the company has expanded into other channels such as production of machinery and a franchise of practices.

The lab is very much a family-run business. Looking after the day-to-day running of the lab is operations director Dean Curcher, although he says the company isn't one for traditional titles. 'If there's a job that needs doing, everyone mucks in and does it - the buck stops with us,' says Curcher, who is joined by two brothers, Wayne and Gary, as well as father Dennis - the company's managing director.
