Silmo preview: Rendezvous in Paris

Optician takes a sneak peek at some new frames set to be launched at Silmo

Neubau

With sustainability at the forefront of patients’ buying choices, collections with authentic products will be a valuable tool in practice. The Silhouette-spin off, Neubau, is now doing its own thing, which means a free run at developing and extending its portfolio of eco-friendly materials, having already worked with bio-acetate and castor beans in the past. The new collection is based on natural acetate and is purely plant-based, including plasticisers. The eight-strong Shapes of Motion collection mixes biodegradable acetate, titanium temples and a selection of bright hues, which are all made in its carbon neutral factory in Austria.

Lightbird

For practices looking for collections with plenty of detail, Lightbird is one of the brands to search for in Paris next month. Designer Corrado Rosson set the tone for Lightbird’s courageousness when the brand launched in 2018 with a collection that fused aluminium fascia with acetate and contemporary lines. The Light Social collection may not feature the aluminium, but this is more than made up for with the aggressive lines and colour blocked acetate. Ambassador is a striking rectangular shape with colour blocked brow lines and liberal faceting.

Marcolin

Italian behemoth Marcolin has all trend bases covered for new releases at Silmo. Futurism is the order of the day for Moncler Lunettes, with the mask-like sunglass ML0239. The low slung style sports Moncler branding on the one-piece sun lens and makes a design detail of the temple lugs around the frame. Ophthalmic style, ML5162 is cut from a similar cloth, with a period double bridge and stepped construction. A trend for deep temples may have been delayed by the pandemic, but as the Swarovski SK5473 ophthalmic style, pictured, shows, it is making itself known. With plenty of real estate on the temples, Swarovski baguettes do the talking.

Komono

Antwerp-based design studio Komono has carved itself a reputation in recent years for delivering avant-garde design at an accessible price point. This year has seen the brand commit to sustainable materials, either bio-based or recycled acetate. Two of the new styles launching at Silmo are the Romeo and Lee sunglass styles. Lee, pictured, has a voluminous squared-off profile, deep temples and soft faceting along the brow line. Romeo is a more subtle affair with refined dimensions and a retro silhouette.

Ørgreen

Ørgreen’s 3D printed Quantum High colletion is about as cutting edge as eyewear design gets at the moment. Sharp silhouettes, innovative construction and carefully selected colours make up an easy-to-wear but impactful range of styles.

The company says the focus for this collection has been about broadening the range of shapes to include classic styles that are treated to a Quantum High makeover. Women’s style Instant Crush, pictured, takes elements of cat’s eye shapes and massages them to larger proportions.

  • Silmo takes place on September 23-26 at Paris Nord Villepinte.
