A new optical assistant course has been announced by the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) College.

The course will combine practical tasks to develop practice-based skills with online modules and workshops, some of which will take place at the National Resource Centre in Birmingham. It will cost £795 and run every September and January. Applications will open on April 23 and the deadline for a September start is August 30.

ABDO College head of operations Stephen Hertz said: ‘Having worked in the arena optical support training for the last few years we find that there is less demand for an examination based course at the entry level, and we are delighted to see this new course with its emphasis on in practice tasks and practical workshops. It will provide a firm foundation for people to progress to the level 4 OA and OT courses and the ophthalmic dispensing courses.’
