The AOP launches its driving and vision campaign for the second year

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) has launched its driving and vision campaign.

The association’s campaign Don’t swerve a sight test will begin ahead of Road Safety Week (November 19-25) for the second year in a row. It aims to highlight the importance of regular sight tests and wants a change in the law that requires drivers to have a sight test every 10 years.

This follows a 2018 survey that found that 44% of optometrists had seen a patient within the last month who had vision below the legal standard and continued to drive against advice.

Henry Leonard, AOP professional advisor, said: ‘It is shocking that so many drivers are overlooking the importance of good vision. Sight loss can often be gradual, and people may not notice changes that could affect their ability to drive. This campaign is about reminding drivers that regular visits to their optometrist are the best way to make sure they meet the legal standard for driving and help make our roads safer.’
