An optometry professor at Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge has been awarded an Asian Jewel Award for her contribution to healthcare and education in the UK and overseas.

Professor Shahina Pardhan, professor of optometry and ophthalmic dispensing at APU, won the Healthcare and Education Award at this year's Lloyds TSB Southern Asian Jewel Awards, which recognise inspirational high achievers from the region's Asian communities, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Professor Pardhan was the first female professor of optometry in the UK, qualifying in 1984 and gaining a PhD in 1989 at Bradford University for her work on summation and inhibition in binocular contrast detection.
