Blackburn optometrist is first in area to receive prescribing diploma

Haroon Ahmed is first OO to receive prescribing diploma in Blackburn area

Haroon Ahmed has become the first optometrist to receive an Independent Therapeutic Prescribing Diploma in the area of Blackburn.

With this qualification, Ahmed will be able to prescribe medication to patients at his practice Tyrells and Embery Optometry, which can release some pressure on the NHS. He invited Kate Hollern, MP for Blackburn to visit the practice to discuss the diploma and to help raise awareness in the local community.

After her visit, Hollern said: ‘It is fantastic; anything that can take pressure off the NHS is great. Eye sight is so precious and early intervention is critical.’

Ahmed added: ‘This will hugely benefit our local hospital eye department, but more importantly the patients. Anything we can do to support the NHS we need to put into place. At Tyrrells and Embery we have always pushed the boundaries and are proud to offer a personal service to our patients and the local community, this service adds to that. We are constantly striving to be at the cutting edge of technology investing in new equipment to benefit our patients.’
