The College of Optometrists announced that it has teamed up with the Irvine Aitchison Memorial Fund (IAMF) to deliver clinical educator training to optometrists and dispensing opticians involved in educational aspects of optometry, dispensing and contact lens practice.
The course is designed for healthcare professionals and would provide ten students with a foundation module that covers the basics of teaching practice.
Run by Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME), the programme is designed for those who want an understanding of the basic principles of teaching and who wish to update their knowledge of best practice.
Delivered by distance learning, the course would be taught via online lectures and webinars over a 12-week period; this will allow students to continue to work full-time.
David Cartwright, chair of the IAMF, said: ‘We are delighted to be taking this innovative step and we very much hope that by equipping individuals with the appropriate teaching and education, more optometrists and dispensing opticians will be encouraged to undertake these roles.’
