College recommends essential services only

The College has recommended that routine sight tests and eye examinations should stop

Routine sight tests and eye examinations should stop and only essential services should be offered by optometrists and practice owners, the College of Optometrists has recommended.

The recommendation has been made following members’ concerns over coronavirus (Covid-19) and public health advice from UK governments to avoid social contact where possible.

Essential services include sight tests based on a clinical need and urgent eye care pathways, the College clarified. It added that providing replacement spectacles for a key worker or seeing a patient with acute eye or sight-related symptoms would constitute an essential service.

Implementing a telephone triage service to determine whether or not a patient requires an essential service was also recommended.
