Daily disposable contact lenses cause less damage to ocular surfaces

New research has highlighted that daily disposable contact lenses caused less damage to ocular surfaces.

The Turkish study compared over three months daily disposable hydrogel, daily disposable silicon hydrogel and reusable silicone hydrogel contact lenses.

A total of 71 people who had never worn contact lenses before were each given one to wear every day for 10 hours. They underwent tear functional tests after the first and third months of the study, such as tear osmolarity, Schirmer testing and tear break-up time, as well as providing a sample of tears to measure inflammatory cytokines levels.

At the end, researchers found that daily disposable contact lenses did not cause as much ocular surface damage as reusable options did.

The study authors said: 'Frequent replacement of lenses prevents accumulation of deposits on the lens and provides more comfortable use of contact lenses.’
